Foot Care for the Diabetic Patient

  1. Do not smoke. Smoking adds to circulation problems associated with diabetes mellitus.
  2. Inspect the toes and between the toes for blisters, cuts and scratches. Use a mirror to examine the bottom of your feet.
  3. If vision is impaired, have a family member inspect your feet daily.
  4. Wash feet daily. Dry carefully, especially between toes. Apply foot powder (Desinex, Dr. Scholl's or Zeasorb).
  5. Avoid extremes of temperature. Test water with your hands before bathing.
  6. If feet feel cold at night, wear socks; do not apply hot water bottles or heating pads.
  7. Do not use chemical agents for removing corns and calluses. THIS CAN BE EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS.
  8. Inspect inside of shoes daily for foreign objects, nail points and torn linings.
  9. Wear properly fitted stockings. Do not wear mended stockings and avoid those with seams. Change stockings daily.
  10. Do not wear garters.
  11. Shoes should be comfortable at time of purchase. Do not depend on them to stretch out.
  12. Do not wear shoes without stockings.
  13. Do not wear sandals with thongs between toes.
  14. Do not walk barefoot and never on hot surfaces, such as sandy beaches or around swimming pools.
  15. See your foot specialist regularly.
