Foot Care for the Diabetic Patient
- Do not smoke. Smoking adds to circulation problems associated with diabetes mellitus.
- Inspect the toes and between the toes for blisters, cuts and scratches. Use a mirror to examine the bottom of your feet.
- If vision is impaired, have a family member inspect your feet daily.
- Wash feet daily. Dry carefully, especially between toes. Apply foot powder (Desinex, Dr. Scholl's or Zeasorb).
- Avoid extremes of temperature. Test water with your hands before bathing.
- If feet feel cold at night, wear socks; do not apply hot water bottles or heating pads.
- Do not use chemical agents for removing corns and calluses. THIS CAN BE EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS.
- Inspect inside of shoes daily for foreign objects, nail points and torn linings.
- Wear properly fitted stockings. Do not wear mended stockings and avoid those with seams. Change stockings daily.
- Do not wear garters.
- Shoes should be comfortable at time of purchase. Do not depend on them to stretch out.
- Do not wear shoes without stockings.
- Do not wear sandals with thongs between toes.
- Do not walk barefoot and never on hot surfaces, such as sandy beaches or around swimming pools.
- See your foot specialist regularly.
